How to Prevent Bedbugs While Traveling: In 3 Easy Steps

Tue, 12/27/2011 - 22:23 — Anonymous Don't let bedbugs keep you down
during your New Years' Travel.  Nothing will make you lose sleep faster
than wondering if the bed you are sleeping in is secretly harboring creepy
crawly blood-sucking bedbugs. Protect your peace of mind by being prepared,
taking the proper precautions, and using preventative measures to make sure
you don't inadvertently bring a few unwanted visitors back home with you.
Even though the bedbug infestation is widespread, you can travel safely by
following a few simple rules at each step of your trip. We put together this
helpful checklist so you can sleep tight without worrying if anything will
bite or go bump in the night.1. Before You LeavePreventative packing is the
first step toward a bed bug free trip.
* When selecting your suitcases, pick any that have a hard shell. Because
there are fewer places for bedbugs to hide, you are less likely to return
home with more than souvenirs if you can use this type of suitcase.
* Buy a box of large Ziploc bags from the grocery store and pack everything
in them, not just the items like shampoo that may leak.
* Pack a few essentials in the battle against bedbugs including a
flashlight, a roll of masking tape, and one plastic trash bag for each
piece of luggage you are bringing. Don't forget to count briefcases,
backpacks, laptop bags, and purses as luggage.
* Call your hotel or other accommodations and ask if they have had a problem
with bedbugs and what they do for detection and prevention. No need to
change your reservation if a hotel has had a previous problem, in some
respects, that may be the best place to stay since the hotel staff will be
hyper vigilant to prevent additional problems. You can also do a search
for the name of your hotel and bedbugs to see if there are any reports
about previous problems.

2. When You ArriveConduct a thorough inspection of your room to ensure it is
bedbug free. It is important to know what you are looking for in order to
conduct a thorough search. Adult bedbugs are about the size of an apple seed
and reddish-brown in color. Their flat bodies are easy to hide in cracks,
crevices, and fabric folds. In addition to live bedbugs, you want to watch
for signs that there were/are bedbugs in the room. Look for evidence of fecal
matter on the sheets and linens which will resemble black or brown pepper and
for empty body shells.
* Upon arriving in your hotel room, place all luggage in the bathtub or
shower and grab your flashlight.
* Start at the bed and use the flashlight to look at the headboard, behind
the headboard, under the bed, under the mattress, along the piping of the
mattress, and at the box spring.
* Check the linens for black or brown spots.
* Next check the bedside table including inside and underneath any drawers
and underneath the table itself.
* Check along the baseboards, in and under the dresser drawers, in the
closet, in the drapes, any upholstered fabric furnishings paying special
attention to crevices and folds, and behind mirrors and pictures.
* If you do not find any evidence of past or present bedbugs, you can rest
easy.
* If you do, alert the front desk and request a different room that is not
in any way adjacent to the first room. Make sure you search the new room
just as carefully.
* Once you have completed your search, move your luggage into the room and
place it on the luggage rack. The luggage rack and suitcase should be away
from the wall and any furniture.
* Your best defense is not to unpack your belongings but rather leave them
in your suitcase encased in their plastic bags until you need them. Use
the trash bags you brought from home to enclose each piece of luggage,
taping the bag closed whenever you are not accessing your belongings.
* Keep your shoes in the bathroom or inside one of the trash bags rather
than in the closet or under the bed.

3. When You Get HomeIn order to make sure you arrive without any stowaways
that can invade your home and cost serious money to eradicate, make sure your
prevention program doesn't stop at your front door.
* When you arrive home, unpack your bags in the garage or outside. Carefully
inspect your belongings as you unpack them for evidence of unwanted
guests.
* Wash all clothes on the hottest setting, even those that were not worn
during the trip. Dry everything on a high temperature setting for at least
30 minutes.
* Vacuum or steam-clean your suitcase inside and out before putting it away.
* If you have items that can't be washed, seal them in plastic bags and
set them outside in the sun for 10-14 days.

With proper preparation and the right precautions you can feel confident that
you have done all you can to ensure that you will sleep tight and not need to
worry about letting the bedbugs bite.Happy (almost) 2012!

Ten Tips for Using Priceline for Car Rentals

Tue, 12/20/2011 - 22:30 — Anonymous You are in the midst of making all the
arrangements for your next great adventure and it's time to finalize your
transportation and arrange for a rental car. Although people have been using
Priceline's Name Your Own Price function for years to find great deals on
flights, many of us don't think to do the same for our car rental
reservations or don't feel confident that we can name our own price without
missing something and ending up with a non-refundable reservation that
isn't what we needed.Because the discounts Priceline offers through this
program can result in a significant cost savings, it is an excellent way to
get more for your travel budget. To help make sure you do, here are ten tips
for using Priceline for your next car rental.1. Priceline offers solid
discounts as part of their standard reservation process without the
restrictions and limitations associated with naming your own price. Start out
by checking Priceline's regular price and work out your optimal car rental
scenario including what locations you are willing to accept for
pick-up/drop-off, times, the number of days you need the car, and the type of
car you want. You might find a price that meets your budget without having to
worry about restrictions.2. Do your research. Make sure you understand what
the different categories of cars offer in terms of amenities and capacity,
both for passengers and luggage. Some brands "economy" category cars
don't have radios and the passenger seating availability in one company's
mid-size might be different than that of another company.3. Check the prices
offered at the national brands websites and other consolidated travel
websites like Travelocity. This will give you a good idea of the average
price for the exact rental you need, ensure you are comparing apples to
apples to apples, and help you pick the right bid amount when you are ready
to bid.4. While researching standard pricing, make sure you are accounting
for differences in weekend rates versus weekday rates versus full week rental
rates. Picking the right rental period may result in additional cost savings
and is a key piece of information you will need to name your own price.5. If
you are flying into a major airport, it may be worth it to check into the
rates available if you pick-up and drop-off at a city location rather than
the airport. Although you will have to arrange for transportation from the
airport to the pickup location and it may not be as convenient, it might save
you enough money to make the extra hassle and the cost of a cab more than
worthwhile.6. As you get ready to make your bid, write out all the details of
what you need to ensure you are getting the exact reservation your vacation
plans require. Remember that Priceline's name your own price program has
severe restrictions around changes, cancellations, and refunds. Taking a
minute to plan out your bid before you commit to anything will help ensure
you don't inadvertently pick the wrong vehicle type or arrival date and end
up paying more than you bargained for.7. Set your initial bid for 20-30%
lower than the best price you found during your standard rate research. You
can also check on Priceline to see the most recent winning bids for
reservations similar to the ones you are trying to make. Use this information
to validate your bid price and adjust up or down if needed.8. The cost of
taxes and fees will be shown as part of your total bid before you finalize
and lock yourself into purchasing. Make sure you review this confirmation
carefully and understand the full cost you will incur if your bid is
accepted.9. In order to get the most benefit out of the discounts Priceline
can offer on car rentals while also averting any unintended costs or
consequences, it is important to remember that the discounts are available
because of the strict rules Priceline imposes on name your own price
reservations. According to Priceline policies, once the name your own price
bid is accepted, you cannot change the reservation in any way, you cannot
extend the reservation at the same discounted price, and you will not get any
refund for cancellations or if you return the car early.10. Lastly, be sure
to read Priceline's policy on delayed/cancelled/rescheduled flights so you
know what you need to do in the event you find yourself in one of these
situations. If your flight is delayed or cancelled and then rescheduled, your
reservations will be held for 24 hours and extended by one day. If your
flight is cancelled and you will not be taking a rescheduled flight, you will
need to contact Priceline's customer support team to determine what options
you have based on your specific circumstances. When it comes to car rentals,
using Priceline to find the right reservation at the right price can save you
a significant amount of money but you need to be prepared and informed in
order to get the rental car you need at the best price available. The extra
time and effort you put in may help you save enough money to splurge on
sampling the local cuisine or taking a once-in-a-lifetime adventure while you
are away from home. Here's another of our favorite posts with Priceline
Bidding Tips.

Groupon for Travel

Wed, 12/07/2011 - 00:31 — Anonymous *Have you ever used a Groupon for
Travel? *If not, now is the time to start.  There are two great ways to take
advantage of a Groupon for travel.1) Groupon by CityA few months before
heading to a vacation destination, sign up for the Groupon offers in that
city.  For instance, if you're heading to Chicago, subscribe to Groupon
Chicago.  If you're traveling to Miami, sign up for Groupons in Miami.
You can get deals on restaurants, theater tickets, museums and more.  A
few words to the wise.  First, be sure to check out the actual map of where
the Groupon is for.  You don't want to get stuck feeling like you have to
drive to a suburban location because you didn't bother to look. Second,
only buy Groupons you think you will use.  Just because a Groupon is cheap,
doesn't mean it's a good deal.  You want to spend your vacation doing
what you want to do, not whatever you feel like you have to do because it was
a good deal. 2. Groupon GetawaysGroupon Getaways are newer – Groupon has
partnered with Expedia to offer some of the best deals on travel.  Below
I've listed the current Groupon for Travel – these Groupon Getaways can
save you loads of money.  Just remember to be flexible in your timing and
travel location and you can score a great trip for super cheap. Also,
remember that if you see one you like, double check the dates and
availability with whomever you plan on traveling with!/Have you used a

Best Microfiber Travel Towel

Thu, 11/10/2011 - 22:59 — Anonymous What do you expect from the microfiber
travel towels you buy? You want softness, which is why microfiber is so
fantastic. You may want a stylish color to match the other towels you have.
You may want something that is absorbent, durable or just plain cute. When it
comes to options, you do have numerous towels to choose from on the market
today. These travel towels are super absorbent – I carry two of the
Micronet (below), a small and a large on longer, hostel-staying, trips.Best
Microfiber Travel TowelTo know what your options are, rely on these tips. You
will find that the following are the top three microfiber travel towels on
the market. That comes from the customers who bought then and reviewed them.
These are your best overall bet for quality and style.Rick Steve's Travel
TowelOne of the top rated products, as reported by consumers, are the New
Microfiber Travel Towels from Rick Steves. Use them for hair drying, babies
or for virtually anything you want and need. This company sells these in a
set of seven. They are super absorbent in that they hold seven times the
weight of the towel in water or other liquid. In addition, these dry quickly,
which means they are able to reduce bacteria growth. You can use them for any
wet or dry application, too. Customers who bought them loved that they were a
good quality and that they were lightweight.Design Go Luggage Travel TowelFor
those that love to splash and play in the water, having a travel towel that
allows for easy drying is critical. A good option is the Design Go Travel
Towel. These are perfect for scuba diving, surfing or other wet sports where
you need a fast way to dry off. There are several reasons that consumers like
these. First, they are a high density knit material that is highly
compactable and it is super absorbent. This means they can help you to dry
off quickly. In addition, they are durable enough to scrub with. These towels
will hold up to five times their weight in
water.http://www.amazon.com/McNett-Micronet-Advanced-Microfiber-Travelling/dp/B000MNJC4A/ref=sr_1_1?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1312892010&sr=1-1Micronet
Travel TowelThese towels come with a net that allows you to more easily carry
and store them.  I own a hand-size towel and an extra large travel towel
from this company and love them.Aquis Adventure TowelThis manufacturer makes
a number of different towel options, with and without microfiber, that are
perfect for sports situations as well as other activities. The Aquis
Adventure Travel is a unique option because it blends a material called
Aquitex, which is super absorbent, with ultra fine micro fibers. This unique
combination makes these towels super lightweight, but they are very effective
at drying off surfaces. They are able to draw in the water quickly so that
you can dry off fast. These are great for drying hair quickly and come with a
special closure to keep the towel in place. For those looking for a fantastic
microfiber travel towel, do consider these options. You will also find larger
towels able to do many of the same features. The customer who bought the
above products say these products work as described and where perfect for
camping or swimming, or just any use./Note: This post contains affiliate

Packing Cubes: Save Space and Travel Lightly

Tue, 11/01/2011 - 22:48 — Anonymous When it comes to *packing cubes*, not
all products are the same in terms of quality, construction and overall
durability. When you are traveling, you need something that is easy to use
and durable. You also need packing cubes that can help you to get through
customs and security at the airport without a problem. Buying the right
packing cubes can actually make it easier for you to travel. These are
necessary for those who travel frequently and who want a great product to
keep them organized throughout their trip.Which Should You Buy?While there
are a number of different packing cubes on the market, some products are just
a better option than others are. As you consider your needs, there are a few
manufacturer's products that received higher praise from consumers. Look at
those here.Rick Steves Packing Cube SetOne of the options to consider is the
Rick Steves Packing Cube Set which has three flexible, five deep cubes with
three side perimeter zippers. When you do not need to use them, though, they
collapse into nearly nothing, taking up very little room. You can pile
whatever you need into them and close them securely on three sizes. It is
easy for the airport security personnel to dig through them as they need to,
though. Customers like the high quality and durability of these. You can buy
them on Amazon for about $16 for 3.eBags Packing CubesThough there are
numerous sizes and shapes available, the eBags Medium Packing Cubes seem to
be the most popular option. This comes in a three-piece set. There are
several benefits to these. These benefits include the double zipper pull to
keep closing easy and the mesh top panel that allows you to see what is in
them. In addition, the mesh is soft enough that it will not damage even your
softest of materials. The handle makes them easy to carry if you do want to
carry them on their own. Moreover, the durability of the entire piece is a
great asset. You can get a set of 3 for $23 dollars at ebags.Eagle Creek
Travel Gear Double Packing CubeAnother option to consider is Eagle Creek's
Travel Gear Pack It Double Packing Cube. It has a mesh top to allow for
breathability. It is sized to fit on top of or into a Pack It Folder 18
inches. For those who are looking for a true travel system, this company's
products are perfect for just that. You will find cubes the right size for
just about anything. These will keep your clothing or your gear easily
accessible but organized throughout your trip, too. Customers like the
durability and the ease of using these. You can buy them on Amazon with free
shipping for about $13.For those who are looking for packing cubes they can
trust to keep them organized and those that are actually sized to be useful
for the items you take with you, choose those listed here. Consumers love the
overall options and details of these packing cubes, and the costs are right
in line with all other packing cubes on the market. Choose the sizes you need
and then rest assured you have the best./Note: This post contains affiliate

Best Water Bottle with Filter Guide

Tue, 10/25/2011 - 23:37 — Anonymous Maybe we were on to something when I
wrote our filtered water bottle review two years ago.  As now there are more
water bottles with filters available than I've ever seen before.
Thankfully, water bottles with filters have also improved dramatically.  The
first one I tried was really hard to get water out of – it was like trying
to suck a think milkshake through a straw. When buying a water bottle with
filter there are a few features to consider*1) What is the water bottle made
from?* All of the water bottles we've featured below are BPA Free.  Many
people prefer stainless steel water bottles because they trust stainless
steel more than unknown chemicals in plastic. (I always prefer stainless
bottles or glass water bottles when available.)*2) What exactly can the
filter filter?* Does it only remove chlorine? Or also lead or other toxic
chemicals? Note that the majority of water bottles with filters are for
potable water (like that you get from your sink or drinking fountain.) Only
one of the bottles featured below can be used to filter microorganisms and
toxins. (And be sure to double check the claims and do your own research
before taking risks with unclean water. If you're going somewhere and you
want to ensure you have safe, clean water, we recommend a Steri-Pen.)*3) How
long will the filter last before you need a new one?* Some of the bottles
below last for 150 refills, others 300.Guide to Water Bottles with
FiltersStainless Steel Water Bottles with Filter*Camelbak Groove .6*The
Camelbak Groove filters the following:"Only use the CamelBak Groove with
potable tap water. The Fresh Filter contained in your CamelBak Groove does
not remove harmful microscopic pathogens that may be contained in tap water
outside of the US, Canada, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. …
[It's] is not a purifier and not certified to be effective against
bacteria, cysts or viruses. The CamelBak Groove is certified to reduce
Chlorine, Taste and Odor.  Chlorine is the leading cause of foul smelling
and tasting water.  When changed as directed, the Fresh™ Filter reduces
more than 90% of Chlorine, far surpassing the NSF reduction requirement. The
Groove lasts for 300 refills and costs $31.*EcoFlow Stainless*Here are the
details on filtration in the Ecoflow Stainless filter bottle: The patented
Ionic-Adsorption Micro-Filtration reduces up to 99.99% of the following zones
of contamination: •Aesthetics: unpleasant taste, odor, clarity, chlorine,
dirt, sediment and Chlorine. •Biological: pathogens such as
cryptosporidium, giardia & other cysts and spores. •Chemicals: toxic
chemicals, detergents, pesticides and other harmful industrial and
agricultural wastes. •Dissolved Solids: heavy metals such as aluminum,
asbestos, copper, lead, mercury, chromium 6 and others. Ecoflo's exclusive
filter has been tested by independent governmental laboratories to EPA/ANSI
protocols and NSF Standards 42 and 53. * Approximately 12 months of use.
•Removes up to 99.99% of pollutants as you drink. •Drink from tap water;
streams, rivers, lakes and pools. •Ideal emergency preparedness survival
bottle.Because this bottle filters so many contaminants it's cost is
steeper at $40. It says the filter lasts up to a year. One side note, several
reviewers said this bottle was more difficult to drink from.BPA Free Plastic
Water Bottles with FilterCamelbak GrooveThe Camelbak Groove (featured above
in stainless) also comes in BPA free plastic. It has all the same features of
the stainless bottle, but costs a little less at $19. One thing I like about
Camelbak bottles is their straw – it's easy for working out, drinking in
the car, and at your desk – as you don't get dribbles down your
shirt.*Britta Bottles*Brita water filters also has BPA Free plastic water
bottles.  It filters Lead, Chlorine, Odor and Taste and costs 18.99 for two.
Each lasts for 150 bottle refills.*Bobble Bottles*The Bobble Bottle with
filter filters  water of chlorine and other common organic contaminants. It
lasts for 300 bottle refills.  Plus it has a recyclable filter and is made
in USA,. They cost $9.00-$19.00 (depending on color). We've had a chance
to try out the Camelbak grove in Stainless, courtesy of Camelbak and liked it
a lot. The other bottles we have not tried, but all get good reviews on
Amazon./Note: This site uses affiliate linking as available. /

InterContinental San Francisco: LEED Certification and Green Initiatives

Mon, 10/24/2011 - 23:43 — Anonymous Are you looking for a green hotel in
San Francisco? Then check out the InterContinental San Francisco. This 550
room hotel in downtown San Francisco just received their LEED Gold
Certification this year. Here's a bit more about the certification and
their current green initiatives.LEED CertificationThe U.S. Green Building
Council awarded InterContinental San Francisco the LEED Gold certification
for Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance. LEED is one of the few
reliable ratings systems for building energy efficient buildings. To earn
LEED Gold, the hotel was evaluated on efficiency and minimization of
environmental impact. It's the largest hotel property to date to receive
LEED EBOM certification in California. And it's only one of 13 other hotels
in the nation to receive this certification.Green Initiatives The
InterContinental San Francisco has undertaken many initiatives to become
greener and receive their LEED Gold award. Here are a few of our
favorites:Green MicrositeThe InterContinental San Francisco has a green
microsite that lists some of their green initiatives. TTransportation
Microsite The transportation microsite allows you to plan your visit based on
what's within walking distance from the hotel and lists public
transportation options from the airport.Use of Public TransportationThe
hotel's concierge assists guests with traveling by public transportation in
San Francisco. And more than 95% of the hotel's staff use public
transportation to get to work.Carbon OffsettingInterContinental San Francisco
is 100% carbon neutral as it purchases renewable energy credits to offset
100% of its electricity and natural gas use.ENERGY StarThe US EPA awarded the
hotel the ENERGY Star rating.Solar Power and Alternative Energy UseThe
InterContinental San Francisco uses solar panels to power some of their
equipment and uses regenerative braking power in the elevators.Temperature
Sensors in Rooms and ecoMode ButtonWhile most of a hotel's green
initiatives are behind the scenes, as customers we mostly notice what happens
in our rooms. One particularly cool feature in this hotel is an "ecoMode"
button. When you enter your room you press the ecoMode button which relaxes
the room temperature by a degree or two. Also, the rooms have temperature
sensors to adjust the temperature for energy savings when the rooms are
unoccupied.Local FoodWhat's not to love about fresh, local, organic food?
The InterContinental San Francisco features local and organic
options.Congratulations to the InterContinental San Francisco on achieving
the LEED Gold certification! GGTG hopes that more hotels continue to follow
its lead.—–This post is sponsored by the InterContinental San Francisco
Hotel, which is proudly LEED® EBOM Gold Certified under the U.S Green
Building Council (USGBC), and is the largest LEED Gold Recipient of existing
buildings in California, and the 3rd largest in the U.S.
